Kinangop MP Zachary Kwenya recently faced the wrath of locals, who chased him away from an entertainment joint for backing the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The lawmaker was in disbelief as revellers at a nightclub openly confronted him in anger urging him to leave the premises, threatening to leave the club if the lawmaker stayed.
A video of the incident obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, shows the MP trying to negotiate his case, but the locals were having none of it, instead calling for his departure. The confrontation escalated to the point where Kwenya could be heard asking whether the locals knew who he was.
More drama: Amid cheers from the crowd, the MP eventually made his way outside the establishment, but confrontation persisted outside as one man could be heard angrily insulting the lawmaker. As Kwenya tried to confront the angry local, the situation escalated once again, as another person appeared to hurl what looked like beer towards the irate politician.
While it remains unclear what the MP did to irritate the residents, it is likely, Kwenya's decision to vote in favour of impeaching Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua played a factor in his woes.
The lawmaker was among the 282 members of the National Assembly who voted in favour of impeaching DP Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday, October 8.
Kwenya's stance on Gachagua's impeachment came barely three months after honouring an invite by the Deputy President at his Harambee office alongside other Members of Parliament including Kanini Kega (EALA), Sabina Chege (Nominated), David Kiaraho (Ol Karau), Irene Njoki (Bahati), Zachary Kwenya (Kinangop), Mark Mwenje (Embakasi West), Amos Mwago (Starehe), Dan Ritho (Igembe Central), Stanley Muthama (Lamu West) and Lamu Senator Joseph Thuku.
Kwenya's plight at the hands of revellers was the latest of a spate of incidents where President William Ruto's allies have received backlash from Kenyans over Gachagua's impeachment.
On Friday, the funeral of the late Henry Gachie Mirithu, brother to the area MP Irene Njoki, turned sour as several Members of Parliament from the Kwanza coalition were heckled by mourners. The heckling began when Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika attempted to read a condolence message from President William Ruto.
Former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria also felt the heat after getting heckled by a charged crowd at SNL Lounge in Githurai 44 during the launch of "MBECA" by Mugithi's youngster Tony Young.
Kuria, who was appointed the President's economic advisor in August, had to cut short his speech after the irate crowd started chanting anti-Ruto slogans.
Only a handful of leaders openly backed Gachagua before the National Assembly, including Embakasi North’s James Gakuya Mwangi, who is one of the DP's fiercest defenders.
Gilgil MP Martha Wangari, meanwhile, also backed Gachagua, insisting 'allegations included in the motion are not serious enough to warrant Gachagua’s impeachment'.
