At least one person was reported dead on Friday morning following an accident that occurred in the Mai Mahiu area along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway in Nakuru County.

The accident involving a trailer ferrying brand-new vehicles occurred at around 7 am after the driver reportedly lost control before the vehicle rolled over along the busy highway.

The trailer then went ahead to crash down the valley, leading to the destruction of several vehicles and consequently the death of one person. In the images and videos that have since circulated online, the heavy vehicle was recorded overturned and extensively damaged.

The vehicles being ferried were also completely destroyed with the photos depicting the extent of the accident. The footage also showed locals from the area surrounding the trailer while first responders moved in to assist injured persons.

Moments later, area police officers arrived at the scene and cordoned the scene to pave the way for further investigations. The trailer was subsequently pulled out of the valley and towed to the nearest police post.

The early morning accident resulted in a huge traffic snarl-up along busy road, forcing a traffic marshall to intervene and direct traffic.

The Mai Mahiu stretch has in recent years gained infamy as a blackspot with numerous road accidents reported at the same spot. The latest incident comes barely a month after about 15 people were injured following an accident along the same highway.

In the accident that occurred on September 13, one person succumbed to injuries while being rushed to the hospital. The accident occurred after a trailer ferrying Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) rammed into several vehicles in Mai Mahiu.

Among the vehicles involved in the accident included a matatu that was ferrying mourners. According to witnesses who spoke to the press, the trailer reportedly lost control after veering off its lane before ramming into the matatu from behind.

While confirming the accident, the Kenya Red Cross Society revealed that it had dispatched a rescue team to the scene to help save lives.

"A road traffic incident involving a 14-seater PSV and a lorry has occurred at Twin Bridge on the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway. There are trapped casualties and response teams are on-site," the Kenya Red Cross announced.

"11 injured individuals have been taken to Molo Subcounty Hospital by the Kenya Red Cross and National Police Service. No fatalities have been reported. The scene has been cleared by the police."
