A section of Mt Kenya leaders led by former Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria on Friday, October 18, asked Deputy President nominee Kithure Kindiki to unite the region once he is confirmed.

The leaders urged Kindiki to seize the opportunity and bring the region, which has in the recent past seen a lot of internal battling together with the view of achieving long-lasting prosperity.

"I am here to invite the Deputy president-elect, Kithure Kindiki to join hands and work together, I'd also like to invite former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, don't harbor hate, let us unite and bring development to Mt.Kenya," Wa Iria said.

He went on to challenge Kindiki to use this chance as the Deputy President to consistently advocate for national unity and veer far away from the infamous shareholder politics.

Recounting how he was once blocked from entering the Deputy President's residence in Karen during Gachagua's tenure as DP, Wa Iria affirmed his firm belief that the country is about to experience a new lease of life in its political culture.

"I am pleading with Kindiki to open the doors of the Deputy President position to the people of Kenya. Let it not be an office for the people of Mt. Kenya, or for those who voted from whatever side, or an office for the few," Wa Iria stated.

Interestingly, the shareholding remarks were part of the accusations Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse leveled against Rigathi Gachagua while moving the impeachment motion. The ousted Deputy President was accused of propagating ethnic politics at the expense of national unity.

Wa Iria went ahead to asked Mt Kenya residents to accept recent developments in the political scene and move forward. He also asked his constituents to embrace Kindiki as their new leader.

His call for unity comes at a time when there is a fierce legal battle with Rigathi Gachagua's lawyers having moved to court to stop Kindiki from replacing Gachagua.

Led by Senior Counsel Paul Muite, Gachagua's legal team faulted the Senate plenary's decision noting that the impeachment took place in the absence of the former deputy president who was a key witness.

Kindiki's nomination as the Deputy President-elect elicited mixed reactions among Kenyans and leaders, with many congratulating him for being nominated.

Moments after he was nominated, Tharaka Nithi residents turned out in large numbers to celebrate.
