Where Are They Now? Nakhumicha, Namwamba & 3 Others Fired by Ruto

Following the anti-government protests sparked by the Finance Bill 2024, President William Ruto did a major shakeup of his entire Cabinet on July 11 after an extensive appraisal of the cabinet secretaries’ performance.

The unprecedented move seemed to quell public outcry against his government. However, a few weeks later, President Ruto reappointed some of the dismissed CSs while the rest were let go.

Where are those who were let go? In this article, we look at the cabinet secretaries left out in the cold and their whereabouts.

Former Cabinet Secretary of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ababu Namwamba, landed a new job in early October. In a statement, Namwamba announced that he was appointed the President of the Africa-China Legal Alliance to work with the Chinese legal firm, Jingsh Law.

The appointment, which saw him shuttle to China, saw him shift his focus to the legal space. Among key roles he will handle include dispute resolution and bilateral diplomacy between Africa and China.

Former CS of Public Service Performance, and Delivery Management, Moses Kuria was appointed to the position of the senior economic advisor to the president. 

He works in the council of economic advisors tasked with guiding the president's economic policies. He was appointed 2 months after his firing in July.

Eliud Owalo, former CS for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy made a comeback as a deputy chief of staff in charge of performance and delivery of management of the bottom-up economic transformation agenda.

While attending the funeral service of Rodah Lusaka, the mother of Bungoma Governor Ken Makelo Lusaka on Saturday, October 19, former CS of Health, Susan Nakhumicha, revealed the struggle she endured after her dismissal.

She asked the Anglican Church of Kenya’s (ACK) Arch Bishop Jackson Ole Sapit to pray for her noting it’s been tough for her. “Bishop pray for me. It’s not easy having been a minister then all of a sudden you are just Nakhumicha,” she lamented.

Mithika Linturi former CS of Agriculture and Livestock Development on his own accord claimed he is jobless. He is the latest politician to comment on the tribulations Rigathi Gachagua has been through. speaking in Meru on Saturday, Linturi regretted having joined forces with President Ruto without a concrete agreement. 

The other members who were dismissed were: Ezekiel Machogu, former CS of Education, Njuguna Ndung’u former CS of National Treasury and Planning and Simon Chelugui former CS of Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Development.

Others are Aisha Jumwa former CS of Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage, Peninah Malonza former CS of East African Community (EAC), the ASALs and Regional Developments, Zachariah Mwangi Njeru of Water, Sanitation & Irrigation and Florence Bore former CS of Labour and Social Protection.
