Two officers attached to Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) were on Wednesday arrested by detectives from Kasarani Police Station in connection with the brutal murder of 26-year-old lady Mercy Rufani.
The two who are in custody at the said police station were nabbed after an intense manhunt spanning several weeks following the murder which occurred in September this year.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspects, both military officers stationed in Embakasi, were the last known individuals to have been in contact with the victim before her death.
The manhunt was launched after the discovery of the victim's body in the Mwiki area along the Eastern Bypass, on the outskirts of Nairobi.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was reported missing from her parents’ home located in Pipeline, Embakasi, on September 28. Consequently, family members of the victim reported the matter to the police who launched investigations to establish the victim’s whereabouts.
A thorough search for the victim turned into a heart-wrenching saga, culminating in the discovery of her lifeless body, partially undressed.
The lifeless body bore bruises on thighs, lower back, and left ankle suggesting the victim was subjected to torture and body harm before her death.
Beside her, detectives found a black blouse, a blanket, and a mobile phone which was used to conduct further investigations.
It was further established that on that fateful night, one of the two suspects picked up the victim from her home in a car before proceeding to his residence in Komarock in Nairobi.
While at the parking lot, a misunderstanding ensued between the two, leading to a confrontation in which the suspect assaulted the victim resulting in her death.
Reportedly, the first suspect called his accomplice to help him dispose of the body. Following forensic trails, detectives flushed the duo separately out of their hideouts in Komarock Estate and Tononoka area in Embakasi, respectively.
The duo is currently detained at Kasarani Police Station, undergoing processing to be arraigned on Thursday, October 24.
