The National Police Service (NPS) on Thursday published alarming statistics showing a worrisome trend of brutal murders reported over the last three months perpetrated by people close to the victims or by criminals.
According to the Service, a comparative analysis of murder cases reported from August to October for the years 2022 to 2024, indicated a slight increase.
In 2024 alone, a total of 339 murder cases have so far been recorded compared with 336 cases in 2023 and 341 cases in 2022 for the same period.
The findings come barely a day after Willis Onyango Aiyeko, 52, a human resource manager whose partially discomposed body was found in Mungowere stream in Khwisero, Kakamega County was initially reported missing at Siaya Police Station on October 21.
Similarly, a disputed body suspected to be that of the Member of County Assembly (MCA) Yusuf Hussein, Member for Dela Ward in Wajir County who went missing on September 13, in Makadara, Nairobi, was found floating at Lake Yahud.
An autopsy conducted on October 21 by the Government Pathologist in the presence of the family doctor, Daniel Zuriel, and local Members of Parliament at Wajir County Referral Hospital Morgue, however, established the cause of death to be head injury due to blunt trauma.
On Thursday, the Nairobi High Court Judge Alexander Muteti issued orders after DNA results showed that a body earlier retrieved from Lake Yakub in Wajir did not match that of the missing MCA.
Based on DNA samples from the body and the mother of the MCA, the post-mortem analysis by KEMRI and Government Chemist did not match leading to the conclusion that the body is not that of the MCA.
Consequently, DCI Wajir will open an inquest for the body while Makadara DCI will continue with the investigations for the MCA's case.
In Kajiado, the body of the late James Nyaata Onchiri, a 62-year-old advocate in Kajiado County, was discovered on October 22, 2024, at about 6.00 pm at the Kajiado Public Works Canteen.
CCTV footage retrieved by the investigators for forensic analysis showed an individual dragging the deceased from the bar towards the vehicle before he reversed and ran over the deceased, then fled the scene leaving the car behind.
The post-mortem analysis conducted on October 23, 2024, at the Kajiado County Hospital by Dr. Dorothy Njeru attributed the cause of death to chest injuries due to blunt force trauma.
Five suspects including the bar owner and the attendants were arrested to assist police with investigation. The suspects appeared before the court for custodial orders. The investigation team was granted five days until October 28, 2024 to probe the matter.
