Property of unknown value went up in flames on Tuesday morning after fire broke out in a residential area in Sigor Town, Bomet County.

The fire, which began at around 10:00 am, burnt down several wooden houses opposite Sigor Sub-County Hospital forcing residents to scamper for safety.

According to witnesses, the fire reportedly started in one of the houses before it quickly spread to neighbouring structures.

Videos and images shared widely on the internet depicted several houses wholly engulfed in smoke as residents helplessly watched from a distance as firefighters fought to extinguish the fire.

No injuries or deaths were reported during the mid-morning incident. However, the cause of the inferno was yet to be established with police officers launching a probe into the incident.

The latest inferno adds to the number of fire occurrences witnessed across the country in recent weeks. The fire in Sigor town came barely two weeks after multiple houses were destroyed by fire in Egesa Estate in Mukuru Kwa Ruben, Nairobi.

The tragic incident that took place on October 17 began after a fire broke out at one of the residential buildings a few minutes before midnight. It then spread to other houses, forcing locals to alert Nairobi County firefighters.

Minutes into the incident, a multi-agency team consisting of the Kenya Red Cross and the disaster management team from the Nairobi County Government were dispatched to the scene to help put out the inferno that engulfed several buildings.

“A fire outbreak has been reported at the Egesa area in Mukuru kwa Reuben. Nairobi Fire Brigade alongside our Community-Based Disaster Response Team are at the scene,” announced the Kenya Red Cross, Nairobi branch.

Videos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed locals attempting to put out the fire with some residents salvaging their property before the fire could spread to other areas.

However, after about two hours of battling the inferno, the county firefighters managed to put out the flames. Nonetheless, the cause of the fire was never established.
