The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the temporary closure of a section of Mombasa Road to pave the way for maintenance.

In a statement released on the evening of Thursday, October 31, the road agency revealed that the road closure would affect a section of Mombasa Road between General Motors and the Nairobi National Park East Gate Road.

"This is to allow for road pavement rehabilitation works to ensure effective road serviceability of the section," the statement read in part.

According to KeNHA, the traffic disruption would take effect from Saturday, November 2, 2024, to Saturday, November 9.

As a result, motorists are advised to seek alternative routes, with KeNHA providing an alternative for light and heavy vehicles.

"We advise motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with police and traffic marshals on site," the statement went on.

How to re-route: Because of the closure, motorists using light vehicles will have to divert into ICD Road once they get into General Motors.

Heavy vehicle diversion is near the Cabanas and vehicles will have to circumnavigate using the Old Mombasa Road.

The Bigger Picture: The Mombasa Road stretch from Cabanas to General Motors has been subject to criticism in recent weeks because of the uneven terrain, which has inevitably led to traffic snarl-ups as motorists are forced to slow down to navigate the pothole-laden road.

KeNHA's decision to close the road for a week has likely been prompted by the fact that the repairs have been rendered impossible because of the busy nature of the highway.
