Digital 2024 Report: Kenya Leads in Time Spent on Social Media Worldwide

Kenya topped the global list for time spent online, the latest Digital 2024 Report in partnership with Visual Capitalist revealed.

According to the Digital 2024 Report, Kenyans spent an average of 3 hours and 43 minutes on social media daily. The average time is spent on social media platforms only excluding any form of browsing the internet.

That is one hour and 13 minutes more than the average time internet users spend on social media every day globally. The data was based on users aged between 16 years and 64 years.

On average, an ordinary user spends almost 2 hours 30 minutes daily on social media, which accounts for more than one-third of their total online time.

The report shows Kenya enjoys high social media engagement ahead of South Africa and Brazil. This is owing to Kenya's internet penetration rate which stood at 40.8 percent of the total population at the start of 2024, according to the report.

South Africa came in second with an average of 3 hours 37 minutes spent online, followed by Brazil with 3 hours 34 minutes, the Philippines with 3 hours 33 minutes, and Nigeria closed the top five with an average of 3 hours 23 minutes spent online.

Ghana and Egypt featured also in the top twenty countries at positions 13 and 14. On average, the citizens from the two countries spent 2 hours 43 minutes and 2 hours and 41 minutes respectively.

From the report, it was established that on average women spend 16 minutes more per day on social media than men.

Of all social media platforms, the most time was spent on TikTok on average per user. In effect, making the popular video-sharing platform the highest average time spent per user.

YouTube on the other hand accounts for the lion’s share of the overall share of total social media time.

Japan emerged as the country with citizenry who spent the least time on social media with users averaging just 1 hour and 53 minutes daily.

With 5 billion social media users globally, recent trends suggest that humanity will spend a combined total of 500 million years on social media in 2024 alone!
