Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), on Sunday, arrested the main suspect in the murder of three women from Eastleigh, Nairobi.

The suspect, Hashim Dagane Muhumed, is believed to be behind the gruesome murder of a mother, her daughter, and her 12-year-old niece who were abducted from Eastleigh in Nairobi before their bodies were discovered.

Muhumed was fished out of his hideout in Eastleigh with sources indicating that the manhunt for him saw the sleuths extend their search to neighbouring countries, including Somalia and Ethiopia.

''Detectives have successfully apprehended Hashim Dagane Muhumed today after an extensive investigation into the tragic murders of a mother, her daughter, and her 12-year-old niece. The horrifying crime prompted a determined manhunt for the suspect,’’ DCI stated in a statement.

Muhumed was identified as an Ethiopian citizen who sneaked into the country using fake documents.

He later reportedly used unlawful means to obtain a Kenyan identification card to aid his stay in the country, without any suspicion from the authorities.

Muhumed also served as a regional police officer in Ethiopia before he was arrested and jailed over claims of murder of his wife. He later fled to Kenya where he set up a base and started a taxi business in Eastleigh and Parklands.

The suspect is currently being held at a police station in Nairobi with the detectives on the case summarising the investigations before he is presented at Makadara Law Courts tomorrow.

''Hashim Dagane Muhumed is currently in police custody, where he is undergoing processing ahead of his arraignment scheduled for tomorrow at the Makadara Chief Magistrates Court. The DCI remains committed to ensuring justice for the victims and their grieving families,’’ DCI added.

The arrest came just a few days after DCI had appealed to members of the public to volunteer any information that they had on the suspect after preliminary investigations indicated that he was the suspect captured on CCTV driving a car that picked the victims.

''Investigations conducted so far have established that the suspect, 24, was driving the Nissan Note (Reg No. KDQ 718Y) car captured on CCTV cameras picking the victims from their Eastleigh home on October 21, 2024, hours before their bodies were discovered scattered at various locations,’’ information from the DCI read in part.

‘’The vehicle was also found abandoned at Wakulima Market near ENA Coach stage and towed to DCI Headquarters for forensic examination, further linking the suspect to the killings,’’ it added.
