The case involving businesswoman Lucy Ng'ang'a's death has taken a new turn as detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have joined the probe into her botched operation.
On Wednesday, November 13, a team of detectives conducted a thorough inspection of the facility in Lavington where Ng'ang'a underwent surgery before passing away four days later.
The DCI also announced that they had formally summoned the staff to record statements at DCI headquarters as the investigation continues.
Among the materials seized by detectives was CCTV footage, which will be analyzed further. Practitioners who performed the ill-fated operation have also been summoned to record statements.
Detectives are keen to understand what transpired between October 16 and 22 when the late Ng'ang'a underwent the procedures.
As DCI intensifies its mission to get to the bottom of the matter, the medical facility's Lawyer Danstan Omari continues to distance the premise from any wrongdoing.
While medical reports claim the businesswoman passed away from complications stemming from perforated intestines from a cosmetic procedure, Omari claims this can't be the case since a patient suffering from such a condition would have lost the battle much sooner.
"If the perforated intestines were perforated here, medical criterion suggests the maximum time you can be alive is 12 hours," he observed. "Once she left here, it took her another four days to pass on."
There are also questions surrounding the certification of the facility to perform such procedures.
In the wake of Ng'ang'a's death, the Ministry of Health and the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council ordered the closure of the facility to pave the way for investigations.
The facility was accused of failing to meet required medical standards, and not adhering to patient safety regulations - which has been strongly disputed by the facility's lawyers.
The late Ng'ang'a was buried last week in an emotional event that was attended by dignitaries including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
