Kenya Met Lists 7 Regions, Including Nairobi, to Receive Heavy Rains for Next 5 Days

The Kenya Meteorological Department has cautioned Kenyans living in various parts of the country to brace for moderate to heavy rainfall for the next five days between Friday, November 15, and Wednesday, November 20. 

According to the weather department, rains are expected in the Highlands East region, the West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-Eastern Lowlands, the Coast, and the North-Eastern region.

In its weekend advisory published on Friday, Kenya Met warned residents living in the counties of  Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi to prepare for moderate rains over the next five days.

Rains in the above counties are projected to begin in the morning and extend into the afternoon. However, the downpour was projected to extend into the night, particularly on Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, heavy rains are projected in the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet and Nandi. The rains would begin in the afternoon and extend into the night.

Residents living in the above-mentioned counties were told to be on the lookout for potential damages as the rains could cause floods. Counties of Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot were also expected to experience a similar weather pattern.

Kenya Met also predicted heavy rainfall in the southeastern lowland counties of Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Tana River and Taita Taveta. Rains in these counties were projected to begin in the morning and extend into the afternoon.

Coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale Counties, as well as the North-Eastern Counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo, were also cautioned to prepare for moderate rains, particularly on Saturday and Sunday.

Temperature Advisory

With rainfall expected to continue in several parts of the country, the meteorological department in its advisory also urged Kenyans living in the Highland East counties of Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka and Nairobi to brace for cold nights.

Nighttime temperatures in the mentioned counties were projected to drop up to 9°C on Saturday before dropping further to 8°C on Sunday and Monday. The same pattern was expected for counties within the Lake region.

Similarly, daytime temperatures were expected to rise significantly in the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega and Vihiga.

According to Kenya Met, daytime temperatures in the above-listed counties were expected to rise to 32°C for the first two days of the forecast before rising further to 33°C for the rest of the days.
