The perennial strikes at Moi University, which is based in Eldoret, have forced some medical students to stay in school for nine years, awaiting graduation.
The students face delays in completing their courses due to perennial strikes prolonging their years of study. A medical student ordinarily takes about six years to complete the course and graduate, however, that is not the case for those at Moi University.
According to reports, medical students have been in the school for nine years, and their hopes of graduating soon continue to diminish with the ongoing situation in the school.
The students still hold onto hope while studying independently, focusing on graduating as medical professionals. Others, however, have given up hope and left the institution without finishing their studies.
Lynne Ndegwa a medical student at the University expressed her disappointment, she scored an A and had high hopes of finishing her studies and delving into the medical space, however, her expectations have been suppressed by the university's situation.
"I still remember the joy that everyone had because I was top in Nyandarua County," she informed.
"It's been long, we joined the school in October 2016, this is our ninth year, we have already been here for 8 years," Francis Ochieng another medical student decried.
"It has been tiring, it has been draining, we're physically, mentally, emotionally and financially drained. It's been a very long stay for us," Noor Salyani, another student revealed.
The students are still optimistic that they will graduate one day, and are keeping the candle of their dreams alive.
The students cannot practice until they graduate, and get a license a year after internship. The situation has tarnished the reputations of the students, who were once role models in their society for performing well and taking on important courses.
"The notion out there is that maybe I dropped out of school or I have decided to do other things apart from studies, but that is not the case, we are just being delayed by the system," Victor Kigen another student decried.
The students are now decrying that the government and the institution find a solution and allow them to finish their studies and progress with their careers.
The University has been faced with challenges from the management to the funding. Currently, university dons in the institution are on a strike that has been going on for a month now.
