The government, on Tuesday, revealed that it had onboarded 18,000 services to the e-citizen platform, making Kenya the first country globally to have such several services online.
Speaking during a meeting with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi at the Immigration offices in Nairobi, Interior Principal Secretary Julius Bitok noted that the government generated Ksh400 billion from the digital platform in the 2023/2024 financial year.
Speaking during a meeting with Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi at the Immigration offices in Nairobi, Interior Principal Secretary Julius Bitok noted that the government generated Ksh400 billion from the digital platform in the 2023/2024 financial year.
According to Bitok, the latest statistics revealed that Kenya surpassed all countries in the number of online services run under a single platform including Rwanda which currently handles over 700 services as well as most European countries.
“From 354 services on e-citizen, we are now doing 18,000 services digitally, the result is that the government collects Ksh300 billion from e-citizen alone and another Ksh100 billion on other immigration functions, making it one of the best performers in revenue collection,” said Bitok.

He also explained that out of the 20,721 services identified for onboarding, the government had already onboarded 17,692 services to the e-citizen, representing 85 per cent of identified services.
PS Bitok further revealed that out of the 547 ministries, departments, and agencies identified for onboarding, 288 were successfully onboarded representing 52 per cent of state organs enrolled on the e-citizen platform.
Following the achievement, the PS disclosed that in the 2023/2024 financial year, the government issued 539,810 passports, 28,121 work permits, 186,892 temporary permits, 566,294 visas and 666,475 Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).
“We have also given out 1,002 Citizenship certificates, 1,472 Permanent Residence certificates, 824,364 second-generation Identity cards, and 972,630 Maisha cards. We have also registered 1,168,151 births and 204,498 which is 45 per cent of deaths,” the Interior PS announced.
During the same period, the PS announced that 6,996,404 Kenyans and foreign nationals were seamlessly cleared at the point of entry while 145,746 refugees were registered.
Bitok said that the Immigration Department collected about Ksh900 million to a billion daily from their services from a paltry Ksh60 million daily when there were less than 400 services, noting that just a few services had remained before all the government services became cashless.
He reiterated that the government was forced to do away with several pay bills and adopted the 222222 pay bill number as the sole mobile payment number to mitigate confusion and possible cash leakage.
During the meeting, CS Mudavadi commended the Immigration department for its dedication and urged the Immigration officials to give Kenyans their best services as a sign of patriotism to their country. “Your first and last agenda should be to the service of Kenyans,” said Mudavadi.
The Acting Interior CS noted that through technology, the country was on the right trajectory even as he called for the onboarding of the remaining services to ensure that there was no cash interaction between the government officers and Kenyans.
“From what I am seeing, when you reduce the human interaction with cash, you have solved more than half of the problems to do with corruption,” suggested the Acting Interior CS.
