A fire has been reported at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport garage on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 19.
The Kenya Airports Authority confirmed the incident indicating that the fire stemmed from a vehicle at the parking garage.
"KAA confirms a fire incident involving a vehicle parked on Level 1 of the JKIA parking garage," a statement from the authority said.
Fire and rescue teams were quick to respond to the incident and extinguished the fire before it escalated to other areas.
While the cause of the fire was yet to be established, the incident did not disrupt operations at the airport.
"Operations at the airport remain normal. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire," KAA's statement went on.
"We want to assure all passengers, airport users, and stakeholders that their safety and security remain our top priority. Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the fire. Operations at Jomo Kenya International Airport are normal."
Being the busiest airport in Kenya, JKIA has several parking areas including the official airport parking at the parking garage building, located opposite terminal 1E.
Other parking areas are strategically located close to entry and exits of terminals - a dynamic which, despite the convenience, poses a threat in an event such as a fire like the one witnessed on Tuesday.
The incident came just months after a similar fire incident which temporarily halted operations at the airport in August 2024.
At the time, KAA attributed the incident, which occurred at terminal 1E, to an electric fault. Power at the terminal had to be cut off as a precautionary measure.
Unlike the Tuesday incident, the August fire led to all flight arrival operations being redirected to Terminal 1A to minimise disruptions.
