A section of residents in Murang'a, Siaya, and Busia Counties are set to lose their land after the government announced plans for several projects that will require additional land.
In Murang'a County, the government aims to upgrade the Kangema-Gacharage (B23) Road. In Busia and Siaya counties, the government plans to initiate phase one of the Lower Nzoia Irrigation and Flood Mitigation Development Project.
In a Gazette Notice dated Friday, November 25, Gershom Otachi, the Chairman of the National Land Commission, announced that the government will acquire land in Murang'a on behalf of the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).
"In pursuance of the Land Act, 2012, Part VIII and further to Gazette Notice Nos. 11675 and 11676 of 2013, and 3345 and 3346 of 2016, the National Land Commission on behalf of Kenya National Highways Authority, (KeNHA) gives notice that the National Government intends to correct and add the following parcels of land required for the construction of Kangema – Gacharage (B23) Road Project," part of the notice read.
The government is set to correct and add nine parcels of land as part of a road update project. These parcels will vary in size.
In Siaya and Busia counties, the government will acquire the land on behalf of the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation. Within the irrigation project, one parcel of land will be deleted and 53 parcels will be corrected. Additionally, the government will acquire 51 more parcels of land for the same project.
According to the notice, these corrections and acquisitions are being carried out per the Land Act of 2012 and several government notices from 2013 and 2016.
Owners of the parcels that have been corrected and acquired are advised to visit Ardhi House or the National Land Commission (NLC) offices in their respective counties to present their land plans for inspection.
"Plans for the affected land may be inspected during office hours at the office of the National Land Commission, Ardhi House, 3rd Floor, Room 305, 1st Ngong Avenue, Nairobi, and at the National Land Commission’s County Co-ordinator’s Office in Murang’a, Busia, and Siaya counties," the notice further revealed.
The government further seeks to inquire for more information on 92 parcels of land in Busia and Siaya counties for the irrigation project for possible compensation.
Affected residents have been advised to appear at Nyadorera Office Site Facility, Nyadorera Office Site Facility, NIB Bunyala Irrigation Scheme Office Facility, Uranga Chief's Camp, and Nduru Open Air Market between December 11 to December 16 with relevant documents for the inquiry.
"Persons interested in the affected land are required to deliver to the NLC on or before the day of the inquiry with a written claim to compensation, a copy of the identity card (ID), personal identification number (PIN), land ownership documents, and bank account details," the notice continued.
