Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) is seeking to raise $400,000 (approximately Ksh 51.7 million at current exchange rates) to enhance its community impact initiatives.

Through the Rotary Club of Generate (RC Generate), established in 2023 with KenGen's support, the company aims to secure funds via Rotary International Global Grants. To date, RC Generate has successfully implemented and supported high-impact projects amounting to Ksh 2 million.

The club also plans to expand its membership to include individuals beyond KenGen staff who share its commitment to community service.

During a visit to the club on Friday, November 22, Rotary District 9212 Governor Dr. Joe Kamau praised RC Generate’s efforts and encouraged members to take advantage of the opportunities available through Rotary’s grants.

“These grants are designed to create meaningful and sustainable change. By aligning your projects with Rotary’s seven areas of focus, such as disease prevention, water and sanitation, basic education, and economic and community development, you can significantly transform communities,” noted Dr Kamau.

During the engagement held in Nairobi, RC Generate President Frank Ochieng noted the club’s strategic plan, asserting its impact in guiding its present and future activities.

“Through this strategy, we aim to increase membership, expand our community impact, raise public awareness about Rotary service, and strengthen our fundraising capabilities,” noted Ochieng, who also serves as KenGen’s Marketing and Corporate Communication Manager.

Ochieng further noted the evolution of RC Generate from an employee-only club to its future vision of accommodating external, like-minded individuals to support its activities.

“We began as a purely KenGen employees’ club, but now we are looking to admit peace-loving individuals who share in our ideals of service to help us grow our footprint in society,” he added.

So far, the Rotary Club has partnered with KenGen to assist in impactful projects across the country in education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability, as well as partnering with golf clubs in fundraising initiatives towards life-changing causes.

At the same time, Governor Kamau highlighted the importance of compliance during grant-seeking but expressed his optimism at RC Generate’s ability to conform to the current guidelines.

"Granting funding is a game changer, but clubs must demonstrate accountability and transparency. RC Generate is well-positioned to meet these requirements and access significant resources," Kamau stressed.

The club’s president reiterated his confidence in the club’s future growth and expressed his delight at collaborating with KenGen. “With our strong foundation and partnership with KenGen, combined with Rotary’s global reach, we are well-placed to create transformative change. Together, we can achieve even greater milestones,” Ochieng affirmed.
