The National Assembly, on Wednesday, November 27, approved the appointment of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Issack Hassan to chair the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) following a successful approval hearing on Friday.
In a statement confirming the appointment, the National Assembly noted that Hassan had been approved alongside seven other members nominated to serve on the board.
"The National Assembly has approved the following persons for appointment as Chairperson and as Members of the Board of the Independent Policing Oversight Authority," the National Assembly made the announcement.
They include; Ann Wanjiku Mwangi, Micah Onyiego Nyakego, Boniface Kipkemoi Samati, Annet Mudolah Mbogo, John Muchiri Nyaga, Ken Williams Nyakomitah and Jackline Lukalo Mwenesi.
During the nomination, President Ruto stated that the wealth of experience gained by Hassan as the former IEBC chairperson qualified him for the position.
"The nominee is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with 30 years' experience as a legal practitioner and consultant in various countries including Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Namibia, and Afghanistan," he added.
"Mr. Hassan holds a Bachelor's Degree in Law (LL.B) from the University of Nairobi, a Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law, and a Diploma in Contemporary Public Administration Management from Galilee International Management Institute, Israel."
The nominees, announced on November 12, appeared before the National Assembly Committee on Administration and Internal Security on Friday, November 22.
The eight are among 20 nominations made by the President on November 14 to serve in four commissions including IPOA, The Commission of Administrative Justice (CAJ), the National Gender Equality Commission (NGEC), and the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
Following the nominations, the Members of Parliament (MPs) across the relevant committees were tasked with conducting approval hearings.
Nominees for the CAJ nominees led by chairperson nominee Charles Orinda Dulo also faced the Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs for vetting on the same day.
Former Starehe MP Charles Njagua alias Jaguar has been nominated in the same commission to serve as a member. Their fate is yet to be determined.
The SRC team, led by chairperson nominee Sammy Chepkwony, faced the Committee on Labour while the NGEC team led by Former Isiolo County Women representative Rehema Dida Jaldesa was vetted by the Committee of Social Protection.
Decisions regarding the latter three commission nominees are yet to be determined.
