Kenyans seeking services from the Attorney General, including civil marriages, have received a significant boost as these services are now being brought closer to them.
To enhance operations and improve accessibility, the Office of the Attorney General has announced plans to establish additional offices across the country.
In accordance with the Constitution, 15 new offices will be opened in various counties, with operations set to begin on January 1, 2025, as revealed by Solicitor General Shadrack Mose.
Services being decentralised include civil litigation, public trustee services, and marriage registration.
The new offices will be established in Nyandarua, Narok, Tana River, Tharaka Nithi, Baringo, Trans Nzoia, Makueni, and Lamu.
Additional locations include Vihiga, Kajiado, Marsabit, Isiolo, Wajir, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Kiambu. These offices will complement the 13 already opened in other counties.
Article 6(3) of the Constitution of Kenya mandates all national state organs, including the Office of the Attorney General, to ensure their services are reasonably accessible in all parts of the country.
Additionally, Section 6(3)(b) of the Attorney-General Act empowers the Attorney General to establish county or regional offices as necessary.
"To enhance Justice in other parts of the country, the office shall decentralize its services of Civil litigation, public trustee, Registrar General-Marriages section and National Legal Aid services to these 15 new counties," Solicitor General Shadrack Mose announced.
The Attorney General and the Department of Justice have assured Kenyans of their commitment to their mission to facilitate the realisation of good governance and respect for the rule of law through the provision of public legal services protection and promotion of human rights.
The AG has directed Kenyans with any inquiry about the services the offices will be offering to contact them through their official website.
In Kenya, civil marriages are conducted by the Registrar of Marriages, Deputy County Commissioners, or Assistant County Commissioners.
To apply, one must provide a valid identification card or passport (both the original and a copy), coloured passport-sized photos, and, if applicable, and relevant certificates (for widows/widowers) or a divorce decree.
This marriage will cost you Ksh50,000 which was increased from Ksh5,000 in 2023.
