Moja Expressway has warned Kenyans travelling along the Nairobi Expressway to exercise caution following an influx of vehicles relying on the elevated road.
The sudden surge in motorists on the expressway has been attributed to the ongoing construction work along Mombasa Road.
“Due to ongoing construction on Mombasa Road, there is increased traffic on the Nairobi Expressway. Please drive carefully, especially at the entrances and exits. Note that the designated speed limit is 80kph,” Moja Expressway said in a statement.
“For your safety, motorists are advised to express caution and drive within the designated speed, especially at the entrances and the exits.”
In a directive issued on Saturday, December 7, the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) announced a seven-day closure of a section of Mombasa Road at the Southern Bypass.
Ending December 13, the closure will facilitate the Southern Bypass Interchange maintenance.
KeNHA stated that the road between FUSO and the Southern Bypass Interchange at Ole Sereni would be under construction during that time.
According to the notice, heavy vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tonnes and other motorists heading to the Southern Bypass would be diverted to exit the highway at Kyang'ombe Slip Road through Old Mombasa Road.
Others will use a single lane provided along the affected section.
“Motorists are requested to exercise caution around the work areas, follow the proposed traffic management plan, and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” read part of the notice by KeNHA.
In another notice issued on Friday, KeNHA announced the partial 37-day closure of Waiyaki Way at the Kangemi Interchange to build a bridge. The bridge is being constructed at the intersection of Loresho, Muthanga, and Hinga roads.
The notice followed closely after other road closures caused by extensive construction affecting the busy highway from the Standard Group offices on Mombasa Road to Gitaru on Waiyaki Way.
