Two tourists of Dutch origin have reportedly died following an accident that occurred in the Mariakani area in Kilifi along the Mombasa-Kilifi Highway.

The accident occurred on Wednesday, December 11, at around 7 a.m. after a van ferrying the tourists lost control and rammed into an oncoming trailer.

Police Spokesperson Resila Onyango, who confirmed the accident to the press, disclosed that other tourists had been rushed to the hospital after sustaining injuries. According to reports, four people sustained injuries including two tourists, a driver, and a tour guide.

Onyango explained that the van was heading to Nairobi when it veered off its lane and crashed into the trailer heading to Mombasa.

The accident resulted in a huge traffic snarl-up along the busy highway as the police and a group of locals struggled to remove the wreckage from the road.

Images of the scene showed people staring at the scene from a distance as rescuers retrieved those who had been trapped inside the van. The accident adds to the number of road carnages witnessed across the country in recent weeks.

Just a day ago, seven people were rushed to the hospital after they were involved in a grisly accident in the Kanungi blackspot along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.

The crash, which occurred on Tuesday, December 10, took place after a seven-passenger vehicle ferrying people to Nakuru lost control and got involved in a head-on-collusion with a lorry.

While confirming the accident, St. John Ambulance announced that it had dispatched a rescue team from the Kinungi Highway Community to conduct first aid on those injured.

"7 passengers have this morning been injured after their  Van (Noah) collided head-on with a Lorry in the Soweto area along the Kinungi blackspot, Nairobi - Nakuru Highway,”  read part of the statement by St Johns Ambulance.
