Three people have reportedly been arrested by anti-riot police officers while demonstrating outside Mombasa Technical University (TUM).
Confirming the reports on Monday, human rights activist Hussein Khalid revealed that the trio was arrested and detained for allegedly demonstrating against the forced disappearances witnessed in the country recently.
In the videos shared by Khalid, the police were captured confronting a group of demonstrators who hoisted placards before cornering them and detaining them inside one of the police vehicles.
During the altercation, one of the protesters was heard questioning the police demanding to know the reason for his arrest. However, the adamant officers proceeded with their pursuit.
"What have I done? Which offence have I committed? Who is this guy arresting people?" questioned one of the victims.
While condemning the incident, Khalid called on the trio's immediate release adding that the police were notified about the protests before today's demonstrations.
"At least 3 persons have been arrested just now in Mombasa outside Mombasa Technical University. We demand their immediate release. Police were notified of the protest and they received and stamped the notification," Khalid commented.
Moments before the incident, a contingent of police officers was seen patrolling the streets of Mombasa in a bid to contain any attempts by the residents to protest.
Addressing the press after the arrest of their fellow protesters, the Mombasa activists vowed to continue with their demonstrations until all those who have been abducted in recent weeks are released.
The activists further accused the police officers of allegedly interfering with their demonstrations despite obtaining permission to hold the protests.
"The police officers have come here in large numbers and are claiming that we won't demonstrate, we want to tell them that we have the right to protest as per the constitution and we will continue with it until all those who were abducted are released," noted one of the protesters.
A similar scene was witnessed in Nairobi where a group of activists launched peaceful anti-abduction protests. Footage of the protests depicted a group of women dressed in sack clothes and marching through the streets of Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).
