Motorists have been advised to avoid the Embu Meru highway after an accident involving a Tahmeed bus operating on the Isiolo-Mombasa route and two trucks.

The devastating accident has left two dead and scores nursing injuries. Reports indicate one of the truck drivers and his turn boy died instantly.

One of the trucks was carrying timber, another truck was transporting maize, and the Tahmeed passenger bus was heading to Mombasa when the accident occurred near the Sewage area in Embu Town.

According to witness accounts, one of the lorries, heading toward Nairobi, experienced brake failure and rammed into the second lorry. The lorry is said to have been standing still and was being inspected by Embu County enforcement officers at a roadblock.

The trailing bus sustained a broken windscreen due to the impact.

The accident, which happened on Wednesday night, January 15 at 8:30pm, caused a snarl along the highway and traffic as rescue efforts continued.

Emergency teams from Kirimari Ward flooded the accident scene to rescue the feared casualties.

Rescue operations were paralysed as the two lorries spilled their loads of firewood and maize sacks, making it strenuous to access the trapped victims.

Police who were also at the scene were forced to use a breakdown truck to separate the wreckage where both lorry drivers were trapped in their cabins.

None of the passengers on the bus died, but some sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby county hospital.

The wreckage has since been towed to the Embu Police Station for inspection as investigations into the accident continue.

Witnesses have raised alarm that the area has always been a black spot, causing more accidents.
