A devastating fire that broke out at the University of Nairobi main campus has left a spate of losses in its wake.
The fire caused huge damage to a section of the famous Mahatma Gandhi Wing, an iconic building at the university located near the old administration building.
According to preliminary reports, the fire is believed to have started on the second floor of the historic building before spreading to other areas.
Initially, the fire appeared to have been contained just past midnight on Thursday, January 16. However, according to Central Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Stephen Okal, the inferno broke out again at dawn.
Security personnel at the university were coming to terms with the midnight incident when they spotted another huge cloud of smoke at around 5am on Thursday.
While no injuries were reported, property worth unknown value was reduced to ashes as fire experts opened investigations to establish the cause of the fire.
Incidentally, the fire occurred just as students were preparing to take on examinations at the university.
Kenyans.co.ke has since obtained exclusive photos of the inferno and its aftermath, with the images painting a grim picture of the devastating effects of the fire.
A source revealed that a considerable part of the third floor was affected by the fire, with images showing ashes scattered along the stairway.
The Senior Common Room and its contents were reduced to ashes, making it one of the most affected areas during the inferno.
Arziki Restaurant was also affected by the blaze, with some sections speculating that the fire emanated from the facility's kitchen area.
Fires in institutions of higher learning have become a common trend, as the UoN inferno happened a month after a similar incident at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).
