The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has cautioned motorists against parking on roadsides, road reserves, roadways, bridges, and tunnels.
In its Commercial Service Vehicle regulations, the Authority noted that where no designated parking areas have been provided, the driver must park the vehicle at least two metres from the edge of the road or roadsides.
According to NTSA, parking at the edge of the road prevents pedestrians from using the pathway, obstructs the view of other road users, and affects the safe operation of the road.
“No carrier or owner shall request, require, or allow a driver to park, and no driver shall park in undesignated parking areas, including but not limited to roadsides, road reserves, roadways, bridges, or tunnels,” NTSA stated.
While announcing the measures, the Authority warned that motorists found contravening the new regulations will be charged a fine not exceeding Ksh20,000.
Alternatively, motorists found culpable of committing the offences also risk imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or both.
Additionally, NTSA cautioned commercial vehicle drivers against operating without a valid driving license. According to the Authority, the licenses must be valid for one year and be renewed annually.
Commercial vehicle owners seeking to renew their licenses were advised to first submit copies of their National Identification documents and details of physical address.
Those seeking to apply for the renewal of a commercial service vehicle operator license will be required to pay a fee of Ksh2000.
The Authority may suspend or revoke any license issued to a driver in instances where the license holder fails or neglects to comply with the provisions of the new regulations.
Before suspending the licence, NTSA will share with the license holder written reasons for the proposed suspension or revocation of their licence.
During the announcement, NTSA urged Kenyans aggrieved by the new regulations to file an appeal upon which the Authority shall forward the complaint to the Appeals Board for resolution within 14 days.
