Property belonging to hundreds of students was destroyed on Thursday night after a fire burnt down a dormitory at Dr Aggrey High School in Wundanyi, Taita Taveta County.

According to reports, the fire broke out around 7 pm when the students were heading for their evening lessons after having their supper.

Efforts by the students and some villagers to put out the fire proved futile, as the inferno destroyed the recently constructed dormitory.

Videos and images shared on the internet showed the dormitory entirely engulfed in smoke, while students stood at a distance watching their property go up in flames.

Moments later, a team of firefighters from the Taita Taveta County Government arrived at the scene and extinguished the fire. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported from the incident.

Preliminary investigations suggested that the fire could have been caused by an electrical fault, potentially triggered by the ongoing rains across the country.

Meanwhile, the school administration has urged students to exercise patience as efforts are underway to find alternative shelter for the affected students.

Similarly, parents and other school leaders have been notified about the incident. Investigations have since been launched to uncover the finer details of what could have sparked the fire.

This latest development mirrors a similar fire incident that occurred two weeks ago at Moi Girls High School in Kibera, Nairobi, where a dormitory hosting 50 students was razed.

The incident at Moi Girls was reported by the Kenya Red Cross Society, which revealed that the fire broke out on the evening of Monday, January 20, while the students were inside their classrooms.

The cause of the fire was not immediately established, but firefighters from the Nairobi City County Government arrived at the school and extinguished the inferno, which had begun spreading to other buildings.

"A fire incident has been reported at Moi Girls High School, Nairobi. The Nairobi City County fire brigade has contained the situation. One dormitory with an unconfirmed capacity was affected, with no casualties reported," confirmed Kenya Red Cross.
