Four people have died, and 56 others have been left nursing injuries after a night-time road accident in the Ogona area on the Londiani-Muhoroni road.
The accident occurred at around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, February 24, when a passenger bus from Climax Sacco, travelling to Nairobi, collided with a truck heading towards Muhoroni.
According to police reports, the bus lost control and swerved off the road, before landing in a sugarcane plantation.
"The bus veered off the road on the left side as one faces the Londiani direction, into a sugarcane farm," the police report revealed.
Witnesses described the accident scene as heartbreaking, with injured passengers trapped in the bus and others in the nearby sugarcane plantation crying out for help.
First responders, including police officers and area residents, rushed to assist, ensuring the wounded were taken to hospital for treatment.
Three women and a man died on the spot. Their bodies were taken to St. Vincent de Paul Hospital Mortuary for identification and autopsy.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Climax Sacco confirmed the accident revealing that injured passengers were taken to the Koru Mission Hospital, the St. Vincent de Paul Mission Hospital Muhoroni, and Muhoroni Subcounty Hospital.
Four out of the 56 who were critically injured were transferred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu for specialized medical care.
The Muhoroni-Londiani Road was previously marked as a black spot, costing many lives. Just a month ago, four people lost their lives along the same road.
Cases of accidents have been on the rise in the country with authorities urging drivers to be extra cautious, especially on accident-prone roads.
This accident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety in Kenya, where frequent crashes continue to claim lives.
Meanwhile, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) continues to stress the need for stricter traffic enforcement to reduce such tragedies.
