Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has 21 political parties while the Kenya Kwanza Coalition has only 15 parties, this is according to the latest disclosure from the Registrar of Political Parties.
In the disclosure made on Wednesday, February 26, the Azimio Coalition remains the largest in terms of party representation in the country, and this is despite five parties applying to leave the coalition.
The parties within the Azimio coalition and their respective number of Members of Parliament (MPs) are as follows: Orange Democratic Movement (89), Jubilee Party (30), Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya (26), Kenya African National Union (5), Democratic Action Party-Kenya (5), Kenya Union Party (3), United Party of Independent Alliance (2), United Progressive Alliance (1), United Democratic Party (1), Movement for Democracy and Growth (1), National Agenda Party of Kenya (1).
The others in the coalition are Chama Cha Uzalendo, the Party for Peace and Democracy, the National Liberal Party, and the People's Trust Party, which all have no MPs in the National Assembly.
The five parties that have applied to leave the alliance are as follows: the People's Liberation Party submitted its application on December 6, 2024; the Maendeleo Chap Chap Party sought to leave on January 25, 2024; and the United Democratic Movement applied to exit on November 22, 2023.
Additionally, the Devolution Empowerment Party submitted its application on April 11, 2023, while the Pamoja African Alliance applied for withdrawal on February 27, 2023.
The Kenya Kwanza Alliance formed ahead of the 2022 General Election had 11 members that rose to 15 after the elections, according to the discloser from the registrar.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) (145), the Amani National Congress (ANC) (8), and the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy-Kenya (FORD-Kenya) (6).
Other parties contributing to Kenya Kwanza include The Service Party (TSP) (2) and Chama Cha Kazi (CCK) (1).
Additionally, the Democratic Party of Kenya (DP), Grand Dream Development Party (GDDP), National Agenda Party of Kenya (NAP-K), and Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) each have one MP.
The other members of the coalition are the Communist Party of Kenya, Tujibebe Wakenya Party, Farmers Party, Devolution Party of Kenya, Economic Freedom Party, and Umoja na Maendeleo Party.
The disclosure follows a petition from city lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi seeking clarity on who is the majority in the National Assembly.
This came after a three-judge bench declared the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition the majority party in the National Assembly, quashing a decision by Speaker Moses Wetang'ula ruling that Kenya Kwanza is the majority party.
Despite the decision, Wetang’ula would, on February 12, also rule again that the Kenya Kwanza are the majority.
However, Wetang'ula confirmed that Azimio holds 154 seats, while Kenya Kwanza controls 165 seats, maintaining Kenya Kwanza's position as the majority party in the August House.
"Arising from the foregoing, the Kenya Kwanza is the majority and the Azimio is the minority. The leadership of the House remains unchanged," Wetang'ula stated, adding that the court had not declared any party as the majority or minority.
