The Ministry of Interior has announced that the 2025 Madaraka Day celebration will be held at the Raila Odinga stadium in Homa Bay County.

Speaking during the inspection of the Stadium on Thursday, February 27, the interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said that the move to select Homa Bay as the host aligns with President William Ruto's initiative to celebrate national holidays across the country.

According to the ministry, the theme of this year's Madaraka Day Celebration will be  'Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs'.

Madaraka Day is a national holiday in Kenya that celebrates the country's attainment of internal self-rule from Britain in 1963.

According to the ministry, the government is in the process of rehabilitation and expanding the stadium to a capacity of 12,000.

Furthermore, the government is set to rehabilitate Kabunde Airstrip and road infrastructure within the area in preparation for the event.

"We had initially planned to host Mashujaa Day here in Homa Bay County this year but because of how the arrangements are, it has become necessary that we host Madaraka Day which will be on the 1st of June and interestingly that will be a Sunday," Omollo said.

"It has been the tradition under the administration of President William Ruto, that we host national celebrations across the country, The first National Celebration we held was in Embu County, then we moved to Kericho County, then Bungoma County, then Kwale County then now Homabay County, and then the next will be in Kitui County," he stated.

According to Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga, this will mark the first time the county hosts the event.

"We've just hosted the National Celebrations Steering Committee, led by the Principal Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Raymond Omollo," she stated.

"This visit marked the inaugural inspection tour of the proposed venues and facilities in preparation for the upcoming Madaraka Day Celebrations," she stated.

According to Omollo, the next National celebrations will be hosted by Kitui County.
