Full List of All 37 Candidates Shortlisted to Replace Wafula Chebukati as IEBC Chair

UPDATE: Kenyans.co.ke got a hold of the names of all shortlisted candidates seeking to succeed Wafula Chebukati as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson.

They are former Chairman of the commission on the implementation of the constitution Charles Nyachae, Former Chief Registar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi, Francis Kakai Kissinger, Duncan Oburu Ojwang , Abdulqadir Lorot Ramadhan, Calistus Wekesa Waswa, Cedrick Ogoro Mukhwana, Choge Rollince, Chrisphine Otieno Owiye and Edward Katama Ngeywa.

The list also includes Erastus Edung Ethekon, Fred Khaemba Masungu, Isaac Mutie Mutua, Jackson Angortum, Jacob Ngwele Muvengei, Josiah Onyancha, Justry Patrick Lumumba Nyaberi and James Humphrey Obanda Oswago.

Others are Kadhua Jimmy Kahindi, Kenneth Kiplimo Kemboi, Kibet Victor, Lilian Wanjiku Manegene, Nelly Peris Ashubwe, Patrick Omutia Otuliia and Peterkin Nyongesa.

Samson Ouma Ogada, Samuel Kariuki Kiragu, Samuel Osewe Ochillo, Saul Simiyu Wasilwa,Thomas Maosa Nyakambi, Vincent Omondi Oluoch, Walubengo Waningilo, William Otieno Oketch, Wilson Wambungu Maina, Wyclife Kiprotich Kiprono Bonnke and Yvonne Mercy Olaka are among the 37 candidates shortlisted. 


The selection panel for the recruitment of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) revealed the updates of the shortlisted candidates and Homa Bay County takes the lead in the application of a  chairperson position with 5 applicants.

In the updates Kisii, Bungoma, and Trans Nzoia counties followed with three candidates each, while Siaya, Nyeri, and Baringo counties had two each. The remaining counties had either one or no applicants.

The selection panel for the recruitment of IEBC officials on March 6, listed 37 candidates shortlisted, 31 men, 6 women.

The selection panel of the IEBC on Thursday, March 6, 2025, issued an update on Kenyans who had expressed interest in the positions of chairperson and members.

Speaking to the press, the panel revealed that 37 applicants had expressed interest in the role of chairperson.

An analysis of the distribution by county showed that Homa Bay had the highest number of applicants, with 5, followed by Bungoma, Trans Nzoia and Kisii, which had 3 applicants.

In total, 17 counties had representatives, although 7 applicants did not indicate their county of origin.

The selection panel stated that they received 1356 applicants for the Chairperson and members of the IEBC.

Out of 1,333 applicants for the position of member of the IEBC, 237 are female, 1,078 are male, and 18 applicants did not attach their identification number.

According to the panel, candidates from 33 counties have been shortlisted, with Homa Bay County leading with 63 applicants, followed closely by Kisii with 62.

Nairobi County had 8 applicants, Nakuru 29, Kakamega 54, Kiambu 20, Mombasa 10, Siaya 2, and Nandi 25, among others.

Makanda noted that several applicants had submitted duplicate applications both via email and in hard copy.

“The panel has narrowed down the applications for both the Chairperson and Member of the IEBC to a total of 1,356. Out of these, 37 are for the position of Chairperson and 1,319 for the position of Member of the IEBC,” he stated.

Makanda assured the public that the panel would complete the recruitment process within the 90-day deadline set by the IEBC Act.

The selection process began after President William Ruto, via Gazette Notice No. 715, appointed the selection panel on January 27 to oversee the recruitment of process.
