Francis Atwoli, the Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), has expressed support for the signing of an MoU between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, stating that it will contribute to a more stable political environment.
In a statement shared with media houses, Atwoli said the agreement would bring peace and economic growth.
“As COTU, we strongly believe that Kenya’s development and prosperity have been hindered by prolonged politicking, which negatively impacts job creation and the improvement of working conditions for Kenyan workers,” Atwoli stated.
He emphasized that Kenyan workers mostly suffer from economic crises caused by political instability, and the agreement would benefit greatly from this move.
"The signing of this MoU is, therefore, a welcome move that promises a more stable political environment, one that will particularly benefit Kenyan workers, women, and children who often bear the brunt of economic downturns caused by political turmoil," Atwoli noted.
He praised the signing of the MoU between Ruto and Raila on March 7 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi, calling it a positive step for the country.
He noted that the unity and stability of Kenya are more important than any individual political ambitions. "It is imperative to recognize that the unity and stability of Kenya transcend any individual political ambitions."
"What the country needs is not perpetual political antagonism but a governance framework that prioritizes stability, economic growth, and inclusive development," he added.
Atwoli emphasized that a responsible opposition should not exist just to oppose but to provide constructive oversight, and the judiciary should uphold the law without bias.
COTU further stated its commitment to supporting political stability since it will lead to economic growth, more jobs, and better working conditions for Kenyan workers.
Atwoli urged the government to shift its focus from politics to governance, ensuring that once elected, leaders are supported in delivering development while maintaining proper checks and balances.
