President William Ruto has reaffirmed the government's commitment to empowering women and girls, ensuring they have the support needed to prosper.

In a video message released on Saturday, March 8, he emphasized that the government’s efforts go beyond addressing inequality and justice and also focus on promoting prosperity for women.

“On this day, we reaffirm our commitment to empowering women and girls not just as a matter of inequality and justice but as a driving force of a stronger, more inclusive, and prosperous society,” Ruto said in his International Women’s Day message.

He highlighted that empowering women is essential for building a more inclusive society and strengthening the country’s development.

Ruto further explained that his administration is working to expand opportunities for women and create an environment where they can thrive.

“We remain resolute in our quest to break barriers, expand opportunities, and foster an environment where every woman and girl thrives, leads, and realizes their full potential,” Ruto reaffirmed.

He further acknowledged the role of women in leadership, business, and innovation, emphasizing that their contributions are vital to Kenya’s progress.

Despite his insistence, his government has been facing criticism over the imbalance in the Cabinet. Ruto has seven female cabinet secretaries out of the 22 positions.

This represents only about 31.8 per cent female representation, falling short of the 50 per cent gender parity that was initially promised.

Despite this, he reassured women that the government remains committed to increasing gender inclusivity in leadership and decision-making roles.

He also recognized the significant impact women have in different sectors, from running families and businesses to leading in politics and community development.

“To the women shaping families behind the scenes, entrepreneurs, innovators, and changemakers driving our economy forward, and to the leaders in politics and community service guiding us into the future—your courage, zeal, and vision inspire us all today and always. Happy International Women’s Day,” Ruto said.

As the country marked International Women’s Day, Ruto urged all Kenyans to continue supporting women’s empowerment, ensuring that every woman and girl has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
