At least 11 people died on Thursday morning after a 14-seater matatu heading to Kisumu from Sirare I Migori County lost control and plunged into a ditch.
Confirming the incident, Nyanza Regional Traffic Commandant Andres Naibei stated that the fatal road crash occurred at Daima area along Katito-Pap Onditi road at around 7 am.
County Commissioner Mohamed Maalim stated: "This is a confirmation that the matatu was overloaded and we expect a thorough investigation to be conducted on how an overloaded matatu could travel all the way from Sirare".
According to reports, among the deceased were a high school student, an infant and nine other adults.
Seven others were injured and rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral Hospital for treatment.
