The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has announced that it will open the university application portal next week.

KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Agnes Wahome, during an interview with Nation on Wednesday, March 19, said that all students who qualified to join the university and applied will get placement.

According to Wahome, the placement service had already received the approved capacities from universities, allowing candidates who qualified for university slots to start their applications.

"This week, we received the approved capacities from universities. They have declared capacities of about 300,000, so you can see that it's more than the students who qualified for admission," Wahome said.

The KUCCPS CEO noted that while 246,391 candidates qualified for university slots, KUCCPS will only place students who will apply for placement.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba echoed Wahome's sentiments, informing the Education Committee in the National Assembly that the university application portal would open before the end of March.

Ogamba, while addressing the legislators on Wednesday, March 19, attributed the delays in opening the application portal to a court ruling that halted the new university funding model.

"We agreed that by the end of this month, the portals would be open for university students. We are now working on what should happen next and addressing related issues," Ogamba told the MPs.

The latest update comes a month after KUCCPS opened a portal for Kenya Medical Training Colleges (KMTC) course applications for the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

KUCCPS CEO, while addressing education stakeholders on January 25, said that the placement service had adopted a phased application process for the first time to allow students enrolling for the March intake to apply on time.

She noted that once KMTC applications are concluded, the placement service would then open its portal for Teacher Training College (TTC) and finally university applications.

“Universities and Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) normally have their intakes later in the year while KMTC and TVETs admit theirs in January, March, and May, hence the need to have a phased application process to enable students to transition to colleges promptly”, said Wahome.
