An unknown number of people have reportedly died, while others are nursing critical injuries following a road accident near Two Rivers Mall in Kiambu County.
According to witnesses, the accident, which involved a 14-seater matatu, took place on Friday morning at around 8 am along the Ruaka-Githogoro highway.
The witnesses further revealed that the crash occurred after the matatu lost control, veered off the road, and rammed into a billboard before landing in a ditch.
Reports further indicated that the Public Service Vehicle (PSV), which was en route to Kiambu Town from Ruaka, was speeding when the accident occurred.
Videos and images shared on social media platforms showed the vehicle extensively damaged with broken seats, windscreen and deflated tyres.
The footage further showed pieces of glass strewn across the road, with a group of locals recorded attempting to rescue those trapped inside the wreckage.
Following the accident, the injured were rushed to Kiambu Level 5 Hospital for treatment, with police officers arriving at the scene moments later.
The accident comes exactly a week after 13 people died in a road crash in the Migaa area along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway, involving a trailer and a 14-seater matatu.
According to a police report, the accident, which occurred on March 14, happened after the trailer ferrying coffee seeds lost control and rammed into the oncoming matatu, which was full of passengers.
The police noted that the trailer lost control after it experienced a brake failure while approaching the black spot, leading to a head-on collision and killing 12 people on the spot.
Footage of the scene showed the matatu extremely damaged while the trailer only sustained damages on its front side. The images of the incident also showed rescuers struggling to retrieve the bodies of the deceased from the site.
The 7 am accident resulted in a massive traffic snarl-up along the busy highway with motorists forced to seek alternative routes to avoid the escalating gridlock.
