Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has castigated the attack on Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya which occurred at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday, March 23, terming it disrespectful.
In a statement on Sunday, March 23, the day of the incident, Mudavadi said that the attack on Salasya was unfortunate and signified division.
“What happened to Hon. Peter Salasya at Nyayo Stadium today is unfortunate. Political intolerance undermines the very foundation of our democracy, which relies on the ability to engage with differing views,” Mudavadi said.
“We won’t always agree, and that’s okay. But respect, dialogue, and unity must remain non-negotiable. Respect must be given, but it must also be earned. Fellow Kenyans, no one else will build this nation for us. If we let division win, we risk tearing down everything we hope to build,” he added.
Mudvadi stressed the need for Kenyans to embrace 'reasoning' and 'maturity' to guarantee the country’s future and togetherness.
“A house divided cannot stand. Let’s choose reason over chaos and maturity over noise. Kenya’s future depends on it,” he said.
Salasya suffered a rough experience on Sunday afternoon during Kenya's World Cup qualifier match against Gabon, which saw the attendance of thousands of Kenyans.
The MP was attacked and forcefully ushered out of the Nyayo Stadium, after an altercation with a section of the crowd.
Videos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke show Salasya struggling to break free from an irate crowd who roughed him up and forcibly showed him towards the stadium's exit.
At some point, members of the crowd tried grabbing the MP to beat him up while one unscrupulous supporter hurled what appeared to be a plastic container at the MP.
The drama made its way to the stadium's parking as tens of supporters flocked to the lawmaker, urging him to exit the grounds.
While it is unclear why Salasya was thrown out, some supporters present at the scene could be heard chanting "Respect the President", in apparent retaliation for what the MP said or did regarding President William Ruto.
Speaking after the Incident, the Mumias Lawmaker, on his X account on Sunday, asserted that Kenyans will remain by his side.
"Kenyans are waking up soon and if you dare do anything to me, it will cause a big problem in this country. I will give a statement tomorrow morning," he shared.
