Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya was on Saturday, May 6, attacked after a section of Kakamega MCAs attempted to bar him from speaking at the funeral of former MCA Stephen Maloba at Munjiti Primary School in Khwisero.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, Salasya noted that the MCAs grabbed the microphone and sought to chase him away from the event. He lauded his security team for rescuing him from the ordeal.
He added that the MCAs did not want any Member of Parliament to address the mourners for unexplained reasons.
"When I stood to speak, they attacked me and grabbed the microphone. Fortunately, my team saved me, and also Karate skills I gained since joining Parliament came in handy," he noted.
When asked if police officers intervened, then first-time vocal lawmaker stated that the officers were focused on ensuring the security of high-ranking politicians who attended the funeral.
Among the politicians who graced the event included United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary-General Cleophas Malala, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa, and Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula.
Others included ODM deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya, Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah, Democratic Action Party leader Eugene Wamalwa and Siaya Governor James Orengo who represented Azimio's Raila Odinga.
Reports indicated that the MCAs faulted MPs in the region for not condemning the incident where Maloba was stabbed in a rally at Khwisero and died on his way to the hospital.
To restore order, Savula called senior Azimio and Kenya Kwanza leaders to urge their members to desist from causing chaos.
Maloba succumbed on Saturday, April 1, after he was attacked and stabbed following a heated confrontation with supporters of Khwisero MP Christopher Aseka Wangaya.
A group of youth, perceived to be the area MP's supporters, approached Maloba and informed him that he was not welcome in the meeting. The group affirmed that they would not allow him in, which led to a confrontation between the two parties.
Chaos ensued afterwards as one of the attackers drew a knife and proceeded to stab the MCA.
Salasya condemned the MCAs for the chaos, advising them to focus on legislation instead of pursuing petty and backward politics.
"They are primitive. They need training in leadership. MCAs in this country need to sober up," PK told Kenyans.co.ke.
