Kisa East MCA Stephen Maloba died on Saturday, April 1, after he was attacked and stabbed following an a heated confrontation with supporters of Khwisero Member of Parliament Christopher Aseka Wangaya.

Reports indicated that the lawmaker had convened a meeting at the home of one of his supporters near a secondary school.

A group of youth, who are perceived to be the MP's supporters, approached Maloba and informed him that he was not welcome in the meeting.

The group affirmed that they would not allow him in, which led to a confrontation between the two parties.

A witness, who spoke to the media and sought anonymity, intimated that the clash occurred a few metres from police officers at the venue.

Efforts by a section of the crowd to restore order were futile as one of the attackers drew a knife and proceeded to stab the MCA.

“Maloba collapsed and fell to the ground. We struggled to rush him to hospital on a bodaboda, he was bleeding profusely,” the witness noted.

Shortly after, Maloba's supporters were enraged and demanded the arrest of the attacker. The politician was rushed to Mbale Hospital in Vihiga County and pronounced dead on arrival.

The lawmaker who had convened the meeting, however, dispelled reports that the incident occurred at his meeting venue.

"To this end, it is paramount to report that the unfortunate death of  Maloba did not take place at the venue of my meeting, neither did he attend the meeting as purported by a section of social media users," Aseka stated.

"I have this afternoon recorded a statement with the Criminal Investigation Department for further urgent investigations into the matter," the lawmaker added.

Maloba's death was announced by Kakamega Deputy Governor, Ayub Savula, on Saturday, April 1, during an interdenominational service organised by Farouk Kibet in Malava, Kakamega County.

"We would like to stay here longer, but we can't. Apologies for that. An MCA has just passed away in Khwisero Constituency."

"He was stabbed after a confrontation ensued between two camps, his and that of an MP," Savula claimed.
