The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has opened applications for college tutors seeking to be among examiners for teacher education assessments.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, April 1, KNEC said it would be conducting training for the tutors who will be marking the exams this month.
Those interested in becoming tutors and marking the exams will be required to pay a Ksh10,500 training fee. According to KNEC, the training fee will only be paid by shortlisted applicants.
“The training fee will be Ksh10,500 and will only be made by the shortlisted applicants, who will be notified through a text message (SMS) and the portal on how to make the payments,” KNEC said in its notice via the government publication MyGov.
According to KNEC, the training will be a blend of online and residential training. “Access to the online training material, dates, and the venue for the residential training will be communicated to the shortlisted trainees at a later date,” KNEC said.
However, successfully qualifying for the training does not guarantee employment. KNEC says it will engage such examiners using the criteria for the recruitment of examiners based on the personnel needs for each paper.
Trained tutors who hold qualifications in Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education (DSTE), Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE), or Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE) and are listed in the KNEC database of examiners are not required to apply.
College tutors are set to undergo training as assessors in a wide range of subjects under the DSTE and DTE programmes. English, Literature in English, Arabic, French, and German are among the languages included, alongside core sciences such as Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.
Other essential disciplines listed for assessment training include Geography and Life Skills Education.
The training also extends to creative and technical fields, with Fine Art, Visual Arts, Music and Dance, Performing Arts, and Theatre and Film making the list. Specialists in Wood Technology, Electrical Technology, Pre-Technical Studies, and Textile Design Technology will also be trained.
Mechatronics and Media Technology round out the technical offerings.
Additionally, assessors will be trained in disciplines such as Environmental Education, Physical and Health Education, and Health and Nutrition, reinforcing the importance of well-being and sustainability.
Religious studies, including C.R.E and I.R.E, are covered, alongside Child Development, Psychology, and Social Studies. Indigenous Languages, Art and Craft, Agriculture, and Science and Technology are also part of the training.
