The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has outlined a procedure students should use to boost their chances of securing their preferred courses.

The placement service, in a notice dated Wednesday, April 2, urged applicants to enhance their likelihood of securing their preferred degree courses by applying for specific courses at universities where the previous cut-off point for the programme is lower than their cluster weight.

Cluster weight refers to a student's computed performance in the four subjects required for a specific degree program, while a cut-off point refers to the weighted cluster points of the last student admitted to a particular program during a given admission cycle.

According to KUCCPS, the previous year’s cut-off points are provided to assist candidates in selecting degree courses they are most likely to secure based on competition.

In the notice, the placement service urged candidates to compare their cluster weight, which is provided on the portal, with the 2024 cut-off points to ease the process of selecting their preferred courses.

To view the available degree courses and their cut-off points, applicants were advised to use the search tool on the “All Programmes” page to search for a specific course by typing in the keyword for the course, such as Education, Agriculture, or Clothing.

“As you decide on the courses you wish to apply for, note down their programme codes, ensuring that you meet all the minimum subject requirements. You can only apply for courses whose minimum requirements you satisfy,” KUCCPS told applicants.

After deciding on the courses to apply for, applicants were advised to enter the programme codes in the slots provided, arranging them in order of priority, starting with their most preferred course.

Once the program codes for all the courses a candidate wishes to apply for are entered, applicants should click the "submit" button and proceed to make the payment of Ksh1500.

The latest update comes a week after KUCCPS officially opened its portal for degree and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) course application.

KUCCPS opened its portal on March 28 to allow 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates to apply for their preferred courses.

In its announcement, the placement service noted that the portal would remain open for 21 days, with the application window set to close on April 21.

“The KUCCPS portal is open for Degree, TVET, and TTC applications. Target: 2024 KCSE for Degree courses and 2000-2024 KCSE for TVET and TTC courses,” the placement service announced.
