According to witnesses, the learners believed to be from Mugoiri Girls High School were travelling home for their April holidays when the matatu lost control and veered off the road before landing in a ditch.

Videos and images of the incident seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed the vehicle leaning on one of its sides with a group of students and residents spotted standing nearby.

The road crash resulted in a traffic snarl-up along the busy road after residents gathered on the main highway and forcing motorists to seek alternative routes.

The latest accident adds to the number of road crashes involving school children witnessed this week. Earlier this week, three students from Ober Boys died after they were involved in an accident along the Sondu-Katito Road in Nyakach, Kisumu County.

As per the police report, the accident which took place on Wednesday, April 2, occurred after a matatu carrying the learners lost control and hit s stalled truck in the kibuon area.

Addressing the press moments after the incident, Nyakach OCPD, Laurinus Odinga, told journalists that the accident left about 14 other learners nursing serious injuries.

He revealed that the crash occurred on a sharp bend and that no signs showed that the truck had been parked beside the road. Odinga further revealed that three pupils and a conductor succumbed on the spot.

On the same day the three learners died, five other students from Mbita High School in Homa Bay were knocked down by a speeding personal car in Mbita town.

Meanwhile, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Thursday, April 3, called on all players within the road transport sector to put measures in place to ensure safety on roads.

NTSA noted that it would work closely with the National Police Service (NPS) to crack down on non-compliant drivers, particularly during this easter season.

"In the past, the country witnessed cases of reckless driving, distractions by students and unfortunately, some of the incidents led to fatal and serious injuries," NTSA noted.

"Through close collaboration with law enforcement, parents/guardians, school management, transport service providers and school children, such incidences can be prevented."
