Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera has threatened to table a motion in parliament to dissolve the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), citing discrimination in the recent teachers’ promotion.

Speaking in Kulumbeni village, Lugari, Kakamega County, during the launch of a road rehabilitation project, Nabwera claimed the exercise was marred by favoritism, discrimination, tribalism and lack of regional balance.

While questioning the criteria used in the promotions, the legislator called on TSC to repeat the exercise, failure of which he would table a motion for the dissolution of the Commission.

“TSC has done the promotions with a lot of favouritism and tribalism. I condemn their actions. As members of the parliamentary education committee, we have summoned TSC officials to appear before us and give an explanation,” the MP said.

“I am calling upon the chairperson of the Commission to rise to the occasion, or else I am bringing an impeachment motion to Parliament,” he added.

Nabwera, while addressing the residents, said he would also recommend to Parliament the suspension of additional funding to the Commission if they failed to address the matter.

The lawmaker further faulted the Commission for allegedly shortchanging regions with high teacher populations like Kakamega, questioning how TSC allocated an equal number of promotions in each region despite the variance in population.

“I will recommend the halt of additional funds to TSC if they fail to correct the mistakes they made during the promotions. We cannot promote people based on equality; we promote people based on equity,” the MP said.

He added, “I know all teachers in this country will support me on this one. There are teachers who have been in the teaching profession for 58 and 59 years but have never been promoted.”

The demand notice comes two days after TSC published a list of 25,252 teachers who were promoted to various grades. The full list was uploaded to the Commission's website on Wednesday, April 2.

The Commission conducted promotion interviews for post-primary school teachers between January 25 and February 6 this year, while primary school promotion interviews were conducted from January 13 to January 23, 2025.

The promotions were part of the Commission's efforts to recognise and reward select teachers for their hard work and dedication to their careers.
