Silas Apollo, a former NTV journalist, has passed away following a tragic road accident in Nairobi.
Apollo's death was confirmed by police, who said the incident occurred on the evening of Thursday, April 10. The former NTV journalist was working with the Nairobi Law Monthly at the time of his death.
Further reports suggest that Apollo passed away after getting struck by a speeding vehicle, with conflicting reports emerging on the location of the crash. However, what is certain is that the driver failed to stop after the harrowing incident.
Apollo was attempting to cross the road when he was hit by the vehicle, reports claim, adding that the case was initially reported as "unknown person hit by an unknown vehicle".
According to a police report, there were two separate accident incidents along Valley Road and Kiambu Road, raising questions about exactly where the late Apollo sustained his fatal injuries.
The Masinde Muliro University of Agriculture and Technology (MMUST) alumnus started out at the Nation Media Group as an intern in the print department between May and August 2012 before returning to his tertiary institution, where he honed his skills as a news editor at MMUST FM.
He returned to Nation, where he worked as a correspondent, before being promoted to a news reporter in 2017. Apollo worked as a news reporter at the renowned station for five years before ending his stint in December 2022.
Since the news of his passing, tributes have poured in, celebrating Apollo as a revered journalist who was brilliant at his craft.
"Working in the media needs a 'heart', and Apollo made me brave. I am now shocked to learn that he has passed on," one of the former journalist's ex-colleagues wrote.
"The most shocking news ever. Rest in peace, Champ," another added.
Apollo's death was the latest high-profile passing of a journalist, coming just days after former KTN journalist Nick Mudimba lost his life after a short illness.
Mudimba reportedly passed away on the evening of Sunday, March 24, at his home in Syokimau, Machakos County, after battling an illness that included high levels of uric acid, which he had been treated for on Saturday.
