Two people are nursing serious injuries following a hit-and-run accident involving a speeding miraa pickup at Kangondu junction along the Embu-Meru highway, an incident that happened on Monday night.
According to the report, the pickup was being driven at high speed when it rammed into a boda boda rider and his passenger before fleeing the scene.
The victims, who sustained multiple injuries, were rescued and rushed to Hunters Medical Centre in Runyenjes, where the boda boda rider, whose condition was more critical, was later referred to Embu Level 5 Hospital for specialised treatment.
The incident has sparked outrage among residents, who blame miraa transporters for a string of reckless driving cases in the area.
Locals are now demanding immediate intervention from the authorities, including the enforcement of stricter traffic rules or a complete ban on miraa pickups along the route.
The latest accident follows closely on the heels of another tragedy just two days earlier, where two brothers lost their lives after being hit by a miraa vehicle.
On February 1, a deadly accident happened in the Njuri area on the busy Embu-Meru highway when a speeding Probox carrying muguka crashed head-on with a lorry, killing two people on the spot.
One passenger survived the crash and was quickly taken to Chuka Level 5 Hospital for emergency treatment.
The lorry was going down a slope when the accident happened. As it came around a corner, the Probox appeared from the opposite direction at a high speed. While trying to make the turn, the Probox driver seemed to lose control and crashed directly into the lorry.
A nearby boda boda rider narrowly escaped death. The truck ended up blocking the Probox from crashing into the motorcycle, saving the rider.
The crash left the Probox badly damaged, reduced to a mangled wreck, while the lorry's front bumper was also damaged.
Moments after the accident occurred, first responders rushed to the scene as efforts to retrieve the bodies from the wreck took place.
