Popular activist Hanifa is among the tens of individuals who have landed new roles at the Nation Media Group as the company recently underwent a mass restructuring.
In an internal communication shared by Editor-in-Chief Joe Ageyo, the company announced the need to adapt to shifts in content consumption and audience behaviour in Kenya and beyond.
Hanifa, who is one of the fiercest critics of the Kenya Kwanza government on social media, has been appointed as a columnist with the Daily Nation. On social media on Tuesday, April 22, Hanifa shared her first article titled We're not going anywhere, and we won't wait for your permission.
Besides Hanifa, Nelson Amenya, who gained nationwide attention for whistleblowing particulars of the Adani deal, also landed a role at the Kimathi Street-based media house.
“As the content landscape rapidly evolves, our newsroom will continue to respond appropriately by constantly evaluating our structures and making adjustments,” Ageyo stated in a communique obtained by Kenyans.co.ke.
The restructuring mainly focused on the editorial department, with the company aiming at boosting digital innovation while also enhancing audience engagement in countries like Tanzania and Uganda, where the media house boasts a significant presence.
James Smart, who previously served as a Senior News Anchor, has been promoted to a more redefined role and will now serve as Managing Editor, Broadcast and New Media.
Washington Gikunju, whose former title was Managing Editor, Planning and Content Hubs, will have his role redefined to a newly-created position - Managing Editor, Content Strategy.
His new role will see him oversee and streamline publishing workflows across print outlets and their related digital platforms. Lead editors across various departments will report directly to Gikunju.
Previously, the lead editor, Harry Misiko, has been promoted to a role within the Content Strategy division, and he will now supervise the content hubs and news desk operations.
Meanwhile, the Regional Editor in Nakuru, Kennedy Kimanthi, has been transferred to Nairobi to become News Editor at the integrated news desk. His previous role in Nakuru will be taken over by Brygettes Ngana.
In the communique, Ageyo praised the team for embracing change and called on all staff to offer necessary support to everyone taking up new responsibilities.
“I urge you to join me in congratulating our colleagues who are taking up new roles. Let us accord them utmost cooperation as we accelerate the transformation of our newsroom,” he said.
