The Director General of the Kenya Meteorological Department, David Gikungu, now says that rains are expected to reduce significantly over the weekend.

Gikungu, while speaking during an interview on TV47, said the reduction in rains was projected in most parts of the country, except for the coastal region, where moderate rains were expected.

He also noted that the reduction in the downpour was expected to last for at least three days before the commencement of another episode of heavy rains across the country.

According to the Kenya Met boss, besides the coastal region, some parts of the Highlands East region, which encompass Nairobi, were also expected to continue receiving rains, but in slight amounts.

"The systems indicate that there will be some reduction in rains in most parts of the country going into the weekend, and the season might pick up later on," Gikungu said.

"However, the coast will remain wet; the indication is that even going into the weekend, the coast will continue receiving rains even in some parts of the Highland East," he added.

During the interview, Gikungu dismissed claims of inaccurate weather forecasts by the meteorological department, stating that the use of technology in weather predictions enhanced accuracy.

Gikungu's comments come on the back of continued heavy rains across the country, particularly in the Central Highlands, including Nairobi, Western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Southeastern Lowlands, the Central and South Rift Valley, and Northeastern Kenya.

The heavy rains have since caused widespread flooding in multiple areas and the displacement of families, further impacting several counties and sectors.

In Nairobi County, at least six people reportedly died on Monday, April 21, following heavy downpours. The six included a mother and her two children who were swept by raging flood waters in Mathare.

According to county officials, the floods in Nairobi also led to the displacement of more than 500 families, particularly those who reside in the slum areas.

A similar situation was witnessed last week in Isiolo, where a car belonging to a Member of the Isiolo County Assembly was swept away by floods with three people on board.
