The Ministry of Health (MOH) has announced that the next cohort of medical interns will be posted starting July 1.

In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry revealed that the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) would conduct balloting for pre-intern graduates on April 30.

"The Ministry of Health will post the next cohort of Medical interns with effect from 1st July  2025," part of the statement read.

"To facilitate a smooth posting process, the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) will conduct balloting for pre-intern graduates on Wednesday, 30th April 2025."

The placement list generated from the balloting exercise will be used to guide the posting of interns to their respective internship centres.

Outcomes for this online balloting exercise are expected to reach interns on the same day, while the ministry will receive the results on May 2.

"The ministry remains committed to supporting the growth of health workers and strengthening healthcare service delivery across the country," the statement concluded.

This follows months of back-and-forth between KMPDC and the Ministry of Health over the delay in posting the interns.

On March 14, the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) announced that doctors in Nairobi County would be marching on March 18 to demand that the interns be posted.

They were also calling for the establishment of a Public Officer Medical Fund, which they had been advocating for for years without any outcomes.

“Ready for Tuesday. KMPDU & UKCS hit the streets on March 18, 2025. Gathering at KNH, marching to demand medical intern postings and a public officer medical fund.” KMPDU stated.

The sector has also been plagued with other obstacles, including an increasing number of interns taking their lives, motivated mostly by poor working environments and low pay.
