The National Police Service (NPS) has called on Kenyans who could have witnessed the shooting of Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Were, to report to the nearest police station.

The appeal follows an update by the Police Spokesperson, Muchiri Nyaga, who revealed Were's last moments before his tragic demise at the Nairobi Hospital.

In a statement on Wednesday, April 30, Nyaga disclosed that yesterday evening, at around 7:30 pm, a white Toyota Crown vehicle stopped at a red traffic light on Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to the police indicated that a motorcycle carrying a rider and a pillion passenger stopped alongside the Toyota car.

Consequently, the pillion passenger approached the vehicle and fired shots at the passenger side before jumping back onto the motorcycle and speeding away.

Following the incident, the driver of the car and a male passenger, both unhurt, managed to rush the lawmaker to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

"Further details gathered at the hospital confirmed the deceased to be Honourable Charles Were, MP for Kasipul. The nature of this crime appears to be both targeted and premeditated," the police revealed.

Despite providing the update, the police service noted that it is too early to provide further details as police commanders and detectives were already at the scene, piecing together the circumstances surrounding Were's death.

While condemning the heinous and senseless murder of the Kasipul lawmaker, the police service expressed its commitment to ensure the perpetrators were brought to book.

"The Service extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, parliamentary colleagues, constituents, and close associates. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact the nearest police station," the police service stated.

Meanwhile, several Kenyans, including fellow politicians, took to social media to condemn Were's killing. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party called for swift investigations into the matter on Wednesday night.

According to ODM, Were was in parliament the better part of the day and left at 6:15 pm after participating in the business of the day.

Were was serving his second term in office since his first election as a legislator in 2017. In 2022 polls, he was reelected to office on the ODM ticket.
