A majority of Kenyans have expressed confidence in former Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi to become the new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson.

According to a survey report released by TIFA Research on Wednesday, May 7, 41 per cent of Kenyans approved of Amadi over former East African Court judge Charles Nyachae.

In the survey, 40 per cent of men expressed support for Amadi, while 42 per cent of women chose her as their preferred candidate to replace former Commission Chairperson Wafula Chebukati.

Nyachae emerged second in the survey, garnering a 23 per cent approval rating, preferred by 23 per cent of men and 20 per cent of women.

He was closely followed by Erustus Edung, who emerged third with an approval rate of 17 per cent, while Abdulqadir Lorot came fourth with a preference rate of 11 per cent.

Besides revealing the most preferred candidate for the IEBC chairperson, the survey also presented Kenyans' opinions on the perceived integrity of the past three presidential elections.

Further, TIFA's report gauged whether Kenyans had confidence in the selection process for the IEBC commissioners and whether they knew the names of the shortlisted candidates.

In the media briefing, the research firm also disclosed the level of confidence Kenyans have in the next general elections, specifically on whether it would be free and fair or not.

The latest survey comes two days after President William Ruto received a report on the recruitment of nominees for the IEBC Chairperson and Commissioners.

The report was presented to the Head of State at State House on Monday, May 5, by the IEBC Selection Panel, led by Chairperson Nelson Makanda, following the conclusion of a rigorous vetting exercise.

According to the IEBC Act, the President will have seven days to select suitable candidates for the Chairperson and Commissioner roles and submit the list to the National Assembly for approval.

Consequently, Parliament will have seven days to vet the nominees and submit a final list of candidates for appointment by the Head of State.
