Three men have been charged with the murder of a 17-year-old girl in Wajir County in March this year.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) told the High Court in Garissa that the suspects killed the girl, who was a refugee, on March 22 at Lolkuta South sub-location, Wara location in Hadado sub-county.

The DPP directed the investigating officers to exhume the victim's body for a proper autopsy before the suspects were charged.

The deceased, born on January 1, 2008, had been married to the first accused, aged 40. The marriage ceremony held on February 22, 2025, at Dagahaley Refugee Camp, followed the Somali rites, the ODPP told the court.

It is alleged that the marriage quickly turned sour, resulting in physical violence after the deceased reportedly changed her mind and left the marriage.

All accused pleaded not guilty to the charges before Justice John Onyiego. The court directed that a pre-bail report be filed in court before making a ruling on bond and bail terms.

The accused persons will be remanded at Garissa GK prison until May 15, 2025, when the case will come for a mention.

In the days leading up to her tragic death, Adan reached out to her mother through a series of heartfelt voicemails. In these messages, she bravely detailed the relentless physical abuse she endured at the hands of her husband and his family.

Adan expressed her desperation and longing to escape her marriage, even voicing a painful wish to return to the refugee camp that had once been her home.

Just moments before her life was cut short, Adan told her mother that her abusers had confiscated her phone.

Not long after, a devastating call came to Adan's mother, delivering the heartbreaking news that there was no longer any need for her to visit, as her daughter had been murdered.

Her body was later found burned beyond recognition, prompting police to jump into action following the outrage from the public and human rights defenders.
